What's the title of the PROJECT?
This is a creative storytelling project, currently called LGBTQIA+ Cancer Stories!
whAT'S THE project about?
There are many stories told about the experience of cancer treatment and care from people who have lived experience of these issues. But what is distinctive about LGBTQ+ experiences?
This project will be exploring digital storytelling in the context of LGBTIQ+ people living in, under, and through a cancer diagnosis. We are interested in centering LGBTQ+ stories and exploring what is common to the experience of cancer treatment and care and what kinds of stories we’d like to see that represent us in all our differences.
The aim of the project is for the stories to be published on a website, LGBTQIA+ Cancer Matters, to help increase the visibility of LGBTQ+ cancer stories.
Who's behind this project?
Staff and students from Goldsmiths University of London, and OUTpatients.
wHO CAN TAKE PART?
- Anyone living with or beyond cancer
- Who lives in and/or was treated for cancer in the UK
- Who is LGBTIQ+
- And is over 18 years old.
wHAT WILL i NEED TO DO?
The project includes an online focus group/roundtable where we will come together to explore and identify some of these issues as a group. This includes discussing what kinds of stories we would like to see and tell, and what are some of the creative storytelling methods we might use.
The second part of the project presents an opportunity for each person to tell their own story, either individually or collectively, using a range of different creative methods. This will include photography, animation, and video storytelling, both online and in-person in London.
There is no prior experience needed. All creative method workshops will be led by experienced practitioners at Goldsmiths, University of London with the project leads from OUTpatients and Goldsmiths, School of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies (MCCS).
