Sex and Cancer: Psychosexual therapy
Psychosexual therapy is a specific type of talking therapy that helps individuals or couples experiencing problems with sex.
If you are having problems related to your sexual function or sexual relationships, and your health care team feel more expert help would be useful, they might be able to refer you to a psychosexual clinic or specialist.
Some areas have an NHS clinic that provides this service, but in some areas it is harder to access this help on the NHS. The College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists has listings of accredited private therapists so you can find a provider working in your area.
When finding the right therapist for your needs, it is important to note that some therapists cover sexual function and relationship issues, whereas others only cover one of these aspects. You should consider your needs and the skills of the therapist when making your decision. You can speak to your clinical team if you need help deciding which support is right for you. They will be able to make a referral for you into this service if they agree that you would benefit from it.
Some therapists can also take couples and help them to work together on addressing the impacts of cancer on sex.
