On the 4th of June, OUTpatients had the absolute pleasure of hosting Drag Bingo at King’s College London as part of their Volunteer Week festivities. The event was designed to celebrate volunteers from across the college, and give thanks to the people who help charities like us to make a difference.
The event began with speeches from both faculty and students, and a series of stalls where volunteers discussed the work they do and the charities they support. It was great to see so many enthusiastic faces, and we know from experience just how rewarding it is to volunteer for a cause you care about.
As the charity partner for this event, we thought what better way to say thank you to volunteers than with a queer staple: drag bingo. Featuring the incomparable Alan from Cancer Is A Drag, and Misty, our slot featured singing, games, and plenty of laughs.
Alan also shared the story of his own cancer diagnosis, and the life-saving treatment he received from the team at King’s. It is this experience that inspired Alan to set up Cancer Is A Drag, and to give back to others the way others had given to him in his time of need. Alongside the fun, it was moving for volunteers to see the impact they can have on people’s lives.
All in all, the event went down a treat. It was a wonderful atmosphere of celebration, and we hope that volunteers left feeling rejuvenated and inspired to keep lending a helping hand.
