Sex and Cancer: Consent
Consent in relation to sex means to agree to the sexual activity freely and with full capacity. In other words, to have a complete understanding of what is going to happen, and with no pressure to say ‘yes’.
Consent is necessary for every sexual interaction.
Clear discussion about consent and pleasure is important when we talk about our sexual activity and intimacy. This foundation of good communication can help people to prepare for a positive experience and check in with each other during sex to make sure of shared pleasure and enthusiastic, continued consent.
Potential questions to help you and partners check in with each other could include:
- How does that feel?
- Are you comfortable?
- Can I touch you here?
- Are you okay to keep going?
Although sex may help us feel closer to others, we should not feel pressured into sex by partners or be made to feel unsafe.
